Staying Safe on the Roads | National Safety Month 2026 Week 2

National Safety Month provides an opportunity to highlight the everyday actions that help keep our communities safe. While safety is often associated with the workplace itself, it doesn’t stop there—safety continues every time we get behind the wheel. For the second week of National Safety Month, we’re focusing on Staying Safe on the Roads.

Roadway incidents are the leading cause of work-related deaths, with 1,146 fatalities in 2024 and over 76,000 serious injury cases reported across 2023–2024. Whether driving for work or traveling between sites, the risks are real and preventable.

Here are key steps you can take to make every trip safer:

  1. Check the recall status of your vehicle and have open recalls fixed immediately.
  2. Avoid distractions while driving – remember distractions can be visual, manual, or cognitive.
  3. When driving, remember to wear your seat belt, obey speed limits, maintain a safe following distance, and keep your eyes on the road.
  4. Set up your drive before you head out – make sure your mirrors are clean and positioned properly.
  5. Pull over to a safe location and park to look up directions, text, or to make or receive a call when on the road.
  6. Never drink alcohol and drive – impairment begins with the first drink.
  7. If you are tired while driving, pull over. On long trips, take regular breaks to avoid fatigue.

Staying safe on the roads is a shared responsibility. Every driver plays a role in protecting not only themselves but also passengers, pedestrians, and others on the road.

This National Safety Month, we encourage you to take time to consider your driving habits and how you can better prioritize safety on the roads. By staying alert, prepared, and responsible, we can all help move safety forward—mile after mile.
