Slips, Trips, & Falls | National Safety Month 2026 Week 4

Week 4 of National Safety Month highlights one of the most common and preventable workplace hazards: Slips, Trips, and Falls. These incidents are a leading cause of workplace injuries and can impact productivity and be costly for employers. Even a minor fall can lead to long-term health issues.

Slips, trips, and falls can happen in any environment, from offices to job sites, but with the right awareness and proactive steps, they can be significantly reduced.  A safer workplace doesn’t require complicated changes — small daily habits like these can make a big difference:

  1. Keep walkways clear: Remove obstacles and clutter from hallways, work areas, and stairways.
  1. Act quickly on spills: Clean up spills immediately, keep drawers closed when not in use, and secure cords by taping them down and keeping them out of walking paths.
  1. Watch your load: Avoid carrying items that block your line of sight.
  1. Use proper training and equipment: Make sure you are trained on fall protection and fall arrest systems when required for your role.
  1. Practice ladder safety: Always maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand) and ensure ladders are placed on stable, solid surfaces.
  1. Stay focused: Avoid distractions like using your phone or reading while walking.
  1. Ensure proper lighting: Well-lit workspaces and walkways help you spot potential hazards before they become a problem.

 

Slips, trips, and falls may be common, but they are far from inevitable. By taking these practical steps and staying mindful of your surroundings, you contribute to a safer environment for yourself and your coworkers.

As we wrap up National Safety Month, remember that safety is not just restricted to one month each year — it’s an everyday priority.
